Sylvie Mus’s Fresh Take on French-Girl Style

October 30, 2024

As a Finnish stylist, fashion insider, and newsletter editor living in Paris, we figured that Sylvie Mus would have a well-informed take on French-girl style. And as it turns out, her definition is both refreshing and approachable—a commitment to personal style rather than following a prescribed formula. Ahead, more insights from our conversation with the effortlessly chic Parisienne.

Sylvie Mus’s Fresh Take on French-Girl Style

Rip & Tan: How does living in Paris influence your style?

Sylvie Mus: In Paris, individual style and personality are celebrated. People tend to have a signature look which they stick to. This encourages me to stay loyal to my own style.

Rip & Tan: What’s your daily approach to getting dressed?

Sylvie Mus: I start by deciding the bottom half of my look and going from there. I choose between my skirts and trousers, and I am then able to very quickly narrow down the pieces that work with my chosen item. If I know that I will have a busy work day ahead of me, I will plan my look in advance to avoid an outfit crisis.

Rip & Tan: While shopping, how do you discern the good from the great?

Sylvie Mus: A great item is one that can easily blend in with the pieces I already have in my wardrobe. It’s not an impulse purchase, or an item that I could only wear for one season or special occasion.

Rip & Tan: As we head into fall, what’s on your shopping list?

Sylvie Mus: The one item I am looking to add to my wardrobe this  fall/winter is a brown cloche hat.

Rip & Tan: How do you evolve your style for fall’s early days? Are there any particular fabrics or pieces you introduce first?

Sylvie Mus: As we transition from summer to fall, I like to make some small changes with light layering. I start with incorporating knits, a trench coat, and boots to my looks.

Rip & Tan: Where do you like to shop in Paris?

Sylvie Mus: I rarely shop, but when I do it’s usually vintage from 7eme Ciel at Printemps.

Rip & Tan: What does French-girl beauty mean to you?

Sylvie Mus: Less is more. I like to focus on a good skincare routine instead of makeup.

Rip & Tan: Where do you go in Paris when you need a dose of inspiration?

Sylvie Mus: One of the most inspiring spaces in Paris for me is Centre Pompidou. This is also where my favorite Rothko painting lives.
