Whether for chopping or presentation, great cutting boards are an important component in a thoughtfully assembled kitchen. Here are some of my very favorites:Edward Wohl

A master in woodworking and design, Edward Wohl has been making exquisite pieces for more than 40 years, including his signature line of bird’s-eye maple cutting boards. My all-time favorite wood cutting boards, I use them for everything from chopping, to cheese platters, to housing my coffee station – even carving my Thanksgiving turkey (on his very largest size).

I sell a variety of styles and sizes in Montecito, and Heath sells most of them as well. Some of my favorites include the one handled, oval, large handled and two handled rectangular varieties, but you truly cannot go wrong with any of them.

Garden Trading

A British company that has become a favorite for items classic, clean and functional around the home, Garden Trading carries a beautiful assortment of wood cutting boards. They feature both round and rectangular shapes that are great as cutting boards and perfect for cheese plates – I love the woven handles. Also great: their oak paddle boards in small, medium, and large.

Vermont Farm Table

A Burlington-based company specializing in farmhouse tables and furniture, Vermont Farm Table also has a great assortment of items for the kitchen, including their wooden boards, which come in a wonderful variety of finishes.

Their quickboards are a favorite. They’re perfect for picnics, or even as a substitute for a plate – I love serving sandwiches on them for my kids. I also like their French Paddles as a cutting board, or to serve pizza or pies, and they also make a great cheese plate. And, just the thing for cheese and hors d’oeuvres: their simple, elegant server.

Lostine

Made using the surplus from designer Tyler Hays’ original custom furniture (he’s the founder of one of my favorites, BDDW), these beautiful boards were made especially for Lostine, and feature an embossed leather medallion and handle that serve to highlight the richness of the wood grain and color.

Wood Oil

And lastly, crucial in maintaining the beauty of your cutting board: a great oil. I carry Black Creek Mercantile & Trading Co.’s beautiful, functional oil in my Montecito store and love it. Also great: this oil, formulated by Edward Wohl. XXJKE
