Natural Remedies: Eucalyptus

February 16, 2016

A bundle of eucalyptus hangs under a running showerhead in a white tiled shower, with water streaming down over the leaves.

This time of year, it seems everyone is getting sick or battling a lingering illness, so I’m always looking for natural remedies to shorten the duration or ease the pain. One of my favorites: eucalyptus. Antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and decongestant in nature, it has a range of benefits and uses – from clearing the sinuses, to easing joint and muscle pain, to fighting and preventing infection.

I have long been a fan of using eucalyptus oil in a diffuser, humidifier or steam shower, both for myself and for the kids, but recently discovered hanging fresh sprigs in the shower, and absolutely love the way it looks and smells. And, the heat and steam of the shower helps to release the same beneficial oils and all of their healing properties.

To try, simply hang a bundle of eucalyptus in your shower – you can find it at flower shops and craft stores – using a natural garden twine (more moisture-resistant than cotton twine). And, be certain to hang away from the spray of the water. Once in place, you can enjoy its scent and benefits for several weeks.

Alternatively, some great eucalyptus oils to try: this eucalyptus essential oil from doTERRA, this one from Eden’s Garden, and this eucalyptus radiata essential oil from Young Living. And for soaps: this eucalyptus bar soap from Thymes, and a natural favorite, Dr. Bronner’s pure castile eucalyptus bar soap. XXJKE
