How We Turned This Malibu Home Into an Ocean Retreat

February 21, 2021

From expansive home renovations to room-specific remodels, our interior design team works with an established budget and timeline to bring the California aesthetic into any space. The latest project in our interiors lineup found us working with the latter in a Malibu home. The ocean escape brought us face-to-face with the often overlooked yet incredibly important space in any home: the bathrooms. Used as a family weekend getaway, the clients were looking to overhaul their four bathrooms to better encapsulate the fresh, light, and beachy look and feel that the rest of their home so easily reflected—as purveyors of the California aesthetic, we were most certainly up for the job. And if this bathroom remodel has you ready for a redesign of your own, our interior design experts are here to help.

The Master Bathroom

One of our firsts to-dos in the remodel was opening up the master bathroom. A wall was separating the built-in jacuzzi and shower, but it made the space feel quite tight. When we first walked into the space, we decided that was the first thing that needed to go. We tore out the tub, got rid of the wall, and let the light fill in. Eager to make the master bathroom an oasis in its own right, we were sure to focus on the details: candles, window treatments from Wovn Home, and a baby olive tree. The finishing touch was our Cedar Stump, which we used as a side table for the luxe bathtub.

The Girl's Bathroom

While this home is a weekend getaway, our clients wanted to make sure each bathroom had plenty of storage space. Just as we did in the master, we decided to build a custom vanity in the girl’s bathroom to provide ample room for toiletries and accessories, as well as bring in schoolhouse satellite sconces for an updated look and feel. With the Carrera countertops in place, we dressed up the space with ceramic details, timeless glass canisters, and our Leather Rivet Vase with some blooms for a dose of color.

The Guest House Bath

When it came to the guest house bathroom design, space and functionality were at top of mind. We needed to be thoughtful with the floor plans in order to maximize the layout while adhering to plumbing capabilities. Our solution came in the form of a pedestal vanity sink, which fit perfectly in the space beside the shower and married form and function seamlessly. Making your guests feel at home is pivotal, so we outfitted the space with luxe accessories like nice hand towels and bud vases to give the room a distinctive air.

The Powder Room

Much like the guest house bathroom, the powder room was short on space. To help open it up, we decided to install a wall-mounted faucet and build a custom floating sink with a beautiful marble basin, which sits on top of a simple oak base. The finished product works twofold: it gives the space a unique feel without overcrowding anything. We utilized our nesting baskets under the sink for easy and elevated storage, as well as fringed bath mats for a textured touch.
