The Canyon Chateau Reveal Part Three: Den
July 26, 2021
Every room in your home plays its own role. The dining room is the entertaining epicenter, the living room is made for moments together, and the den? That’s a space with open-ended possibilities, which makes it the most exciting room (in our expert opinion) to decorate. A prime example of this sentiment is Julia Hunter’s den—fresh off of a remodel, she curated her space with the Jenni Kayne interiors mindset from start to finish. Read on for the full tour, plus a few can’t-miss design tips.

The Canyon Chateau Reveal Part Three: Den
Rip & Tan: How did you land on the color scheme for your den? Which paint colors were you choosing between initially, and how did your chosen shade influence the rest of the room’s design?
Julia Hunter: We fell in love with the den on our first visit to the house and couldn’t wait to make it feel like ours. We knew we wanted to use the room for watching TV as a family and also as an office during COVID. Jenni had a dark room in her old house that inspired this one, so it was mostly a negotiation between me and my husband on how dark we could go.
Ray preferred using the same white color (Gem by Portola) that we used in the rest of the house, and then Jenni selected a medium grey (Beachwood by Portola) and a black color (Oliver by Portola). We ultimately compromised on Beachwood and love how it turned out.
Rip & Tan: From the timeless furniture to the simple sconces, what are your favorite elements of this room?
Julia Hunter: I love the built-in cabinetry and the Rose Uniacke sconces—together they create such a peaceful and inspiring mood. The old windows are completely irreplaceable and they add so much character to the room, and I love the way the linen roman shades by one of my best friends Davina at Wovn Home complete the window vibe.

Rip & Tan: How did you decide on the furniture for this space? How did you want it to feel different yet in sync with the rest of your space?
Julia Hunter: We wanted this room to be comfortable and durable since we spend time on the couch with the kids. The Miramar Chaise is one of my favorite pieces in our new collection. It’s the perfect place to take a minute to catch up on email or read a book with a cup of coffee. Our 3-year-old Cal loves to snuggle up on the chaise with me under a blanket and we read books together there. I also love the Canyon Coffee Table—it’s the perfect height, especially when paired with our Harbor Sofa, and the oak wood has the most beautiful grain. Plus, it has a vintage feel so it can handle the wear and tear of our family.
Rip & Tan: Walk us through the objects on your shelves. What are some of your most treasured pieces and how do they add extra meaning to this room?
Julia Hunter: I had no idea I could love ceramics so much until I started working with Jenni. Over the last 7 years with the company I have collected beautiful pieces from different artists and love each of them for different reasons.
The ceramics obsession has also helped me better appreciate some of the art my mom has saved over the years, so I now have a few of her antique Chinese pots that she acquired when she lived in China—I never saw the beauty in them until recently and now they are a couple of my favorite pieces.
Rip & Tan: Any other design call-outs you want to share?
Julia Hunter: The beams in the ceiling and the tiny windows at the top of the room are old details that give the space character we could never have come up with on our own.
