The Canyon Chateau Reveal Part Five: Bedroom
August 16, 2021

Julia Hunter’s Mandeville Canyon home is full of inspired spaces, but her bedroom is the place we dream of on a daily basis. With a focus on texture and light, uplifting shades, the entire room is an ode to California design. Eager for more details on her bedroom remodel, we asked Julia to share her favorite design moments, sources, and how she created her own at-home haven.

Rip & Tan: What was the overall vision for your bedroom and what were your sources of inspiration?
Julia Hunter: We loved the countryside feel of the bedroom and wanted to keep that softness that was there. The indoor/outdoor elements of the bedroom were also a plus—with so many great windows and trees surrounding the space, we wanted to maximize that aspect of the room. The old beams on the walls and ceilings gave the space a romantic vibe that we also wanted to preserve through the redesign.
Rip & Tan: What was the most important factor when it came to choosing décor for your bedroom?
Julia Hunter: So much of the room is about the windows, so the window treatments were really the most important decision for us. I love everything at Wovn Home and they helped me choose the most beautiful triple pinch pleat drapes and the perfect black French return drapery rods. I think the curtains really set the tone for the room. The way it all came together was so wonderful, and the window treatments are probably my favorite part of the whole house.

Rip & Tan: Where are your furnishings, finishings, and bedding basics from?
Julia Hunter: Like the rest of the house, almost everything in our bedroom is from Jenni Kayne. I love our Pacific Bed in ivory boucle, and our new Palms Night Stands in oak and walnut are so good. We have the Miramar Chaise in the corner and love to cozy up there in the afternoons or evenings to read. The wall sconces and the plaster cone ceiling pendant are by Rose Uniacke, and our linen bedding is by Parachute.
Rip & Tan: From the window treatments to oak wood flooring, how does each element aim to give way to a calm, California feeling?
Julia Hunter: We wanted to evoke the natural feeling of California with a neutral and warm color palette. Beyond that, we also tried to keep things light and bright but very simple and textured when it came to the finish choices. We kept the old planks in the floors but stained them lighter, painted the walls and beams with Portola Paints’ Gem, but we kept the beams in the walls for the texture, which I think gives the space a vintage look and feel.
