Gift List: Colin King’s Curated Favorites

December 5, 2022

In our ongoing hunt for that perfect special something for every last person on our list, we’re back with another installment of Gift List, the series in which we ask some of our favorite creatives to share the items they’re gifting this season. In this edition, Colin King—stylist, creative director, and renowned arbiter of taste—gives us his well-honed guide to the kind of gifts that never go unappreciated.

Gift List: Colin King’s Curated Favorites

Rip & Tan: What’s your approach to holiday gifting?

Colin King: I always like to gift something functional but beautiful—almost utilitarian. Something that the receiver would never splurge on for themselves.

I love gifting textiles, serveware, glassware, and coffee table books.

Rip & Tan: Any go-to pieces you keep on hand for helpful last-minute gifting?

Colin King: I do have a bunch of my sentiment paper weights from my collection on hand for last-minute gifting. It feels unique, unexpected, and versatile.

Rip & Tan: Do you have any tried-and-true sources for seamless gifting?

Colin King: I love going to Karma Bookstore or Arcana Books and finding the perfect coffee table book for someone on my list.

Colin's Gift List

From Jenni Kayne, I’m planning to gift the Musk Ceramic Candle, Alpaca Basketweave Throw in Cocoa, The Nico Tray, Straight Rock Glass, and the Knit Llama.

Akari 1P from the Noguchi Shop: Nothing beats the glow of an Akari light sculpture by Noguchi. A unique and affordable gift that everyone will love.

Vintage Boro Zokin: A zokin is a traditional Japanese dust cloth or cleaning rag; it is usually made from old pieces of cloth and it is usually layered and stitched for durability. It makes a beautiful sustainable gift.

Scalloped Charlotte Bowl from John Derian: I love gifting unique serveware that can be adorned on a shelf and be pulled out for special occasions.

Cast Iron Incense Holder from Nalata Nalata: This incense holder has so much personality and is not only functional but also makes a beautiful object.

Marfa Trucker Hat: I am always the sucker that buys merch wherever I am. Recently, on a trip down to Marfa I got this cap from a gallery down there and get compliments on it all the time. It comes in fun colors and is a fun gift for anyone.

Rip & Tan: What are you eyeing for yourself this season?

Colin King: Ah, that is a great question. When you shop for a living like I do, I find it hard to shop for myself. I try to pick up something on each of my travels, and most of the time I feel like I live out of a suitcase so I don’t limit my personal gift-giving to a certain season of the year.

Rip & Tan: What are you the most excited about for the holiday season?

Colin King: Spending time with family and friends. Plus, some much-needed rest and overindulging in deserts.
