In the Veggie Kitchen: Setting the Holiday Table
Whether you’re planning a big dinner or just a casual get together, creating a beautiful environment for a holiday gathering can be easy. Seasonal florals will do a lot of the work for you—delicious, homemade food and drinks also certainly help to set the scene. For our latest In the Veggie Kitchen gathering, my co-host Suzanne Hall from The Chalkboard Mag and I asked florist Ren MacDonald and chef Lori Stern to share some of their ideas for the holiday season. We’ll be featuring Lori’s recipes for holiday cookies and drinks tomorrow. Today, I wanted to shine a spotlight on Ren’s gorgeous floral work, enhanced by a few of my favorite entertaining essentials and some handmade name tags by Simone LeBlanc.
For Lori’s food we set a small buffet table with two layered Matteo linen tablecloths, the bottom one flat and the top one a bit messy for a casual, organic feel. Wooden cake stands from World Market, mugs from Gjusta Goods, and some pottery from Victoria Morris provided space for Lori’s treats, and Ren filled in the gaps with seasonal cranberries, pinecones from Big Sur, Angelica blue juniper, and Tasmanian blue gum eucalyptus. Rose gold Canvas Cutlery wrapped in striped napkins with Simone’s name tags and a little floral cluster affixed to the front added a personal touch.
Ren used the same floral materials to create a garland down the center of the dining table, mixing in some taper candles for a romantic feel. She also made a wreath for the front door using a wreath form and floral wire. I loved the way her floral concept extended from the front door to the buffet table to the dining table for a unified feel. When you’re shopping at the floral market ahead of your own gathering, get more than you think you need! You can always create additional arrangements for the entryway, guest bathroom, and beyond.
