How Jenni Perfected This Elevated Fall Tablescape

Rip & Tan: How would you describe your general approach to a fall gathering?

Jenni Kayne: I want everyone to feel welcome, comfortable, and cozy. During these colder months, coming together feels even more special because of the celebratory nature that’s in the air, and I try to bring that to every type of gathering, big or small.

Rip & Tan: What are a few hosting must-haves you always have on hand?

Jenni Kayne: An arsenal of neutral plates and napkins, tumblers, enough flatware for an army, plus plenty of wooden and large serving platters.

Rip & Tan: Can you walk us through your process for planning the perfect fall tablescape?

Jenni Kayne: I always turn to my surroundings when I’m thinking up a tablescape, as well as the occasion, You don’t want your tabletop to overpower the event. Aim to have it reflect the season and the overall feeling you want to evoke.

For this scene, I worked with Moon Canyon to bring a Scandinavian look to my table. We placed dried branches and muted, dried florals in a vintage vase from Olive Ateliers, and pine cones scattered throughout the table. To break it up, we placed some pine cones in wooden bowls from Olive Ateliers, which I think adds to the coziness and relaxed look.

Rip & Tan: Any other insight to share for those not sure where to start when decorating their tabletop?

Jenni Kayne: Nature is my biggest source of inspiration when I’m setting the table. I love using foliage like fir, eucalyptus, cedar, spruce, hemlock, juniper, and pine to give it some seasonal texture. Try placing pinecones down the center of your table or adding sprigs of eucalyptus to each setting for a tablescape that’s simple yet inviting.

Rip & Tan: Any pointers for last-minute entertaining?

Jenni Kayne: Keep it simple. Sometimes just making a big pot of soup or chili for guests to enjoy is so impactful and can alleviate a lot of the cooking stress.

Rip & Tan: What’s your approach to décor for the holidays?

Jenni Kayne: For me, it’s almost always the same. I like to focus on things that will last and that reflect the landscape. I’ll hang garlands inside and out and I try to keep it all clean, simple, and sparkly.
