In case you missed the exciting news, our second lifestyle book, Pacific Natural At Home, will be hitting shelves come October 12th. While we can’t yet share the interiors featured in Pacific Natural At Home, we’re bringing you a select set of tours on Rip & Tan that speak the same California-inspired language as those in our book—and nothing says coastal design quite like Simone Harrer’s beautiful Malibu home. With a serene backyard that draws everyone outdoors and an array of elements that make her space nothing short of a wellness destination, every detail is a celebration of California living.

Rip & Tan: How would you describe your home’s aesthetic in 3-5 words?

Simone Harrer: Relaxed, warm, chic, and inviting.

Rip & Tan: Which room do you live in the most?

Simone Harrer: The kitchen. So much happens in the kitchen.

Rip & Tan: No matter what the day has brought your way, how do you feel the moment you walk through your door? How do you want others to feel when they enter your space?

Simone Harrer: I feel like I am home. There is a special energy that I felt the second I walked into the house. It’s very calming and loving. I hope that everyone that comes through our home feels welcome, comfortable, and at ease to be authentic and open. Cry if you have to, laugh when you want, but always be true to who you are.

Rip & Tan: What were your points of inspiration when designing your home?

Simone Harrer: Farmhouses in Italy and Provence with a little touch of Bali.

Rip & Tan: What are some of your favorite pieces and places in your home and why?

Simone Harrer: My favorite piece of art is the shark painting in my dining room by Natalie Arnoldi because it always gives me so much calmness looking at it. I also love the Buddha that my dad gave me when I was a child. He looks so happy surrounded by lots of children.

There are so many favorite places in my house. But if I had to point one out one, it would be my dining table eating with family and friends laughing and telling stories. And my bed. I love my bed.

Rip & Tan: What makes this space feel like home?

Simone Harrer: Food on the stove, baked goods in the oven, and my house filled with my family and friends

Rip & Tan: What do you love the most about California living? How is this reflected in your home?

Simone Harrer: California weather is just so amazing, so I created so many sitting areas all around the outside. I sit in different areas at different times of the day. I love my coffee in the front yard in the early morning.

Rip & Tan: How is your home centered around wellness?

Simone Harrer: I love anything wellness. I have a big steam room that holds a lot of people after we go surfing, and my barrel sauna and ice tub are good for inflammation and overall health. I also love the infrared sauna just to get a good sweat in the morning when I wake up. I created spaces where I meditate daily. One of my guest cottages is a meditation area where I hold retreats with the many amazing teachers I know.

Rip & Tan: How does living by the beach influence your home’s design? How does it impact your approach to living within the space?

Simone Harrer: We surf a lot and I am so grateful to be able to do that so close to my home every day. I also only shower outside. I created an outdoor bathroom so I can get in with sandy feet and my wetsuit and take a hot shower. There is nothing better than an outdoor shower.

Rip & Tan: What does living well mean to you? How do you bring this to life in your own home?

Simone Harrer: Living well has so many meanings. Physically, mentally, and spiritually. Being comfortable with oneself, loving oneself but sharing that love with your environment. Eating good, healthy food and spending time in nature so your body functions in the best way.  Treating everyone and everything with respect, and finding your passions.

I want to create a space that my family and anyone that passes through feels relaxed. I always love sharing my home and the energy, and for that, I have to make sure that my energy and that within my family is full of love, understanding, and kindness. When you create from that place of positivity, any space can be spectacular, no matter how big or small.
