Orange

February 11, 2016

Three ripe oranges hanging from a tree branch, surrounded by green leaves and sunlight filtering through the foliage.

From the minute Tanner could talk, orange was his favorite color. While his most prized orange possession may be his Trico Field Mickey Mouse T-shirt, I’ve found many “grown-up” uses of the shade too. Here are some of my favorite moments for orange this spring!

Clothes

This season I made really great shorts and pants in orange silk linen. I styled the pants with a white cable knit short-sleeve sweater that plays off of country-club chic while staying young and cool. Stella McCartney also used orange for Spring. I just bought her cute stripe shorts and I love her orange blazer – it’s on my wish list.

Accessories

I love getting an orange fix in my accessories. It’s such a great pop of color and pretty much looks chic with everything. I especially love pairing it with white or nude. Last year, I used the Celine orange leather shopper all summer long. As soon as it warms up a little I can’t wait to break it out again.

On my recent trip to Paris I came across this amazing Celine florescent orange snake clutch and fell in love. I’ve never received more compliments on anything I’ve worn – there is something so special about the shade of orange that people freak out over! For a similar look at a more affordable price, I love this orange snake clutch from Hunting Season.

Hermes is famous for its orange, which is the signature color of the house – and of course its boxes. I always love Hermes watches with leather straps- they’re simple and classic and will last a lifetime. The Cape Cod with an orange leather strap is a particular favorite of mine.

I also snagged these Nico Nico necklaces from my store – I love the color combination and wearing them together.

Décor

Alongside my bowls of lemons, I always have a basket of oranges from the farmers market or from our orange trees in the garden. I put them in this chic woven basket I found years ago at Merci in Paris. My friend Amanda recently tracked them down at Pure Deco , where you can order them. I love the way the oranges look as fresh decor.

Kitchen

Another place I like to have unexpected moments of orange is in the kitchen. I love the Flame Orange color that Le Creuset makes and how it looks when we’re serving dinner.

I also got hooked on this Orange Tempeh recipe from 101 Cookbooks. I adapted Heidi Swanson’s recipe, switching tempeh for tofu – it’s Tanner’s absolute favorite! We make it constantly with brown rice and steamed spinach.

Kids

J. Crew has great orange accessories for kids right now. I love this burnt orange classic Kanken backpack – it kills me when I see it on Tanner’s little back! I’m also a big fan of their fluorescent orange shoelaces that I put in Tanner’s grey suede MacAlister boots – they make any shoe fun and cool! Tanner and I just came across these orange Top-Sider slip-ons and I couldn’t resist ordering them for summer. Another favorite is the K-Way raincoat – it’s great for school too.
