In Uniform: Heaven Schydlowsky's Upstate Getaway Guide
November 2, 2022
In our second installment of In Uniform—the series in which we ask the style-minded women we admire to delve into their expertly edited wardrobes and break down the makings of their everyday ensembles—we followed our very own Director of Digital Product, Heaven Shydlowsky, on her well-dressed weekend in upstate New York. Read on for her guide to effortless style and an unforgettable getaway in the Catskills.

In Uniform: Heaven Schydlowsky's Upstate Getaway Guide
Rip & Tan: In as many words as you’d like, how would you describe your personal style?
Heaven Schydlowsky: I would describe my personal style as classic and relaxed. I love simple silhouettes and colors, but also really need to feel comfortable in my clothing. After I’ve set a good foundation, I add my personality to the outfit: a fun bag, some hoops, or a new pair of ballet flats.
Rip & Tan: What pieces make up your weekday uniform? Does that differ on weekends?
Heaven Schydlowsky: I primarily work from home on the weekdays so my uniform usually consists of a cozy knit and easy-going trousers. Lately, I’ve been throwing on my Everyday Sweater in Taupe—it’s lightweight and perfect for when I need to step out and run some errands during the day.
But the weekend is a totally different story. I’m usually out taking in all the events the city has to offer: block parties, Broadway shows, and tons of dinners. So the weekends are a bit more playful and relaxed. I’ve been taking my Cashmere Overcoat in Olive for a spin!

Rip & Tan: Do you prefer dressing for the everyday or putting together a look for special occasions?
Heaven Schydlowsky: There is something so exciting about putting together a look for special occasions. My friends will shake their heads when I send them a deck of my outfit ideas for an event or a trip, but I just love piecing together my closet for a special day or excursion.
Rip & Tan: How do you deal with those mornings when you don’t know what to wear?
Heaven Schydlowsky: Having a uniform is key—staples that you can always depend on when you simply don’t know what to wear. That being said, I’ve definitely come across a morning or two where I’m just staring blankly at my closet.
Lately, when I’ve been loving my outfit, I’ll snap a picture and add it to a folder on my phone. When I’m lacking a bit of creativity, I’ll go back to some of those outfits that I felt good in!
Rip & Tan: If you could only choose two neutrals to wear for the rest of your life, what would those be?
Heaven Schydlowsky: Chocolate Brown and Ivory.
Rip & Tan: Regardless of seasons, what are 3 pieces every woman needs in her wardrobe?
Heaven Schydlowsky: Call me biased, but I think every woman needs a cozy, elevated knit, chic pair of shoes that are also comfortable, and a crisp button-up shirt. And one more: a simple piece of everyday jewelry.
Rip & Tan: Whether it’s an accessory or an iconic pair of shoes, do you have a favorite purchase? What about a favorite piece you’ve been passed down from someone?
Heaven Schydlowsky: My Mansur Gavriel square ballet flats in Ivory have definitely been one of my favorite purchases lately. I love that they really work in every season and add so much brightness and expression to an outfit.
This fall I’ve been living in my grandmother’s Ann Taylor leather jacket. The fit is perfect and adds a very feminine, vintage look to my outfits.

Rip & Tan: Tell us about your weekend getaway. What was on the itinerary and what did you bring along for the trip?
Heaven Schydlowsky: I went upstate with my husband and in-laws for a long weekend in the Catskills. It was perfect timing—the leaves were just turning beautiful, colorful hues and the weather was so crisp.
This wasn’t my first time in the Catskills so I was so excited to take the family through the beautiful scenery that is only 3 hours from our home in Brooklyn.
Rip & Tan: Do you any recommendations on where to stay?
Heaven Schydlowsky: While we stayed in a sweet Airbnb by a creek in Shandaken, I also love Piaule, Inness, The Maker Hotel, and Foxfire Mountain House for accommodation.

Rip & Tan: What about spots to dine?
Heaven Schydlowsky: I love to travel for food so I made sure we hit all the spots.
First was Brushland Eating House. This cozy restaurant, by chef couple Sohail and Sarah Zandi, features fresh, local ingredients in a set menu format. This night was Spaghetti & Meatball night complete with garlic knots, a chopped salad, and tiramisu I can’t stop thinking about.
Phoenicia Diner is the best diner experience in the area. Complete with booth seats and milkshakes (pictured here!).
Harana Market is one of my favorite places to lunch. It’s a charming mini-mart outside of Woodstock that serves up authentic Filipino food. We ordered everything on the menu and sat next to the creek on picnic tables. Divine!
Along with plenty of hikes and tons of relaxing by the fire in our Airbnb, we also went to a ’60s rock show in Woodstock to surprise the parents.
