In case no one’s told you lately, not every gathering needs to be a full production. If you ask us, the best aren’t. In summer especially, it’s all about indulging in a slow, easy sweetness—and as of late, we’re taking that quite literally. That’s why, at a recent backyard gathering, Jenni called on Cucina Melissa’s own Melissa Norton for a cake and cocktail pairing worthy of the season—and Melissa, in the spirit of celebration, gave us two. As far as we’re concerned, it’s simply not summer without a surplus of seasonal berries. Crumbles, tarts, cobblers—we’re here for it all, but for this party’s purposes, Melissa opted for a celebratory yet perfectly simple layer cake. For sake of ease, it’s best left nearly naked—let the berries and figs have their due moment in the sun.
