Studio Visit: The Elder Statesman
February 16, 2016

The genius behind The Elder Statesman, Greg Chait has over the years become a close friend – my sister Maggie introduced me to Greg and his beautiful line of cashmere, and I have been addicted ever since. He uses the finest, softest, most delicious cashmere and makes it feel casual and perfect for everyday.
What began in 2007 with a series of custom blankets, The Elder Statesman has evolved into a luxury lifestyle brand with an offering that includes hats, gloves, scarves, handkerchiefs, eyewear, home accessories and ready-to-wear. At its root: an unwavering commitment to exceptional quality, impeccable craftsmanship and the finest materials.
Greg recently moved into a new studio space and we were lucky enough to get a peek inside. He is the definition of laid-back cool, and his workspace feels much the same. Surfboards adorn the walls, and there is a wonderfully relaxed feeling the moment you walk through the door – refreshing in the fashion business, and indicative of the energy that is uniquely Greg. I hope you enjoy this look into his studio and world. XXJKE
R+T: When did you start your business and what inspired you?
I started my business in 2007, but went into the global market in 2008. I was initially spurred by my love for cashmere blankets and cashmere in general. I was always looking for the perfect cashmere blanket. I couldn’t find it, so I decided to have my own created. That little process was the ignition of the whole brand.
R+T: What is your favorite part about designing knits?
Developing what is in my mind, a perfect texture.
R+T: What has been your biggest challenge in business?
There have been so many; it’s hard to say. It changes with each stage, as there are always challenges when one is aggressive but also sticks to one’s guns.
R+T: If you had to choose one piece, which would be your favorite you have ever made?
It would be a blanket. Too many to choose, but right now, this handwoven jam we are doing.
R+T: How long have you been in your new space?
5 months.
R+T: What was your inspiration for the design of your space?
Didn’t really have one, to be honest. The space pretty much called for what we did. It already had awesome vibes.
R+T: How do you balance having a functional studio that also looks great?
Having enough space is probably the key to this. The ability to spread out.
R+T: What are your three must-haves in the studio?
1. Great light
2. Enough space to grow a bit
3. Awesome technological functionality
R+T: What’s your favorite piece in the studio?
The desk that Loren Crawford made for me.
R+T: Do you order in or go out to lunch when you’re working? What are your favorite nearby restaurants?
Both. Sage is probably everyone’s favorite. Second would be Pinches.
R+T: What music do you listen to when you are working?
I listen to tons of different categories. I can range from early punk to country to Too $hort.
R+T: Who do you get excited about seeing your collection on?
Impossible question.
R+T: Where do you find your inspiration? What inspires you?
It comes from my own life and friends’ lives. First person feelings and experiences.
