Rip & Tan: As an expert on infusing European sensibilities into modern spaces, how do you interpret the concept of a classic?
Phoebe Nicol: My philosophy towards design is about creating spaces that go beyond any single style. It is about blending materials, forms, and architectural gestures, letting emotions guide the process rather than adhering to rigid styles, resulting in the interiors being both refined and comfortable. This approach allows me to create unique spaces, reflecting the individuality of each client and their personal story creating harmonious interiors that honor the past while embracing the present.
Rip & Tan: In the early stages of a project, how do you get a sense of what your client wants? How does the creative process begin?
Phoebe Nicol: We tailor our approach to each concept and project, recognizing the distinctiveness of every client brief. Our design process and philosophy are guided by an appreciation for the architectural aspects of the home and a keen understanding of the client’s lifestyle needs. Collaborating closely with our clients, we translate their personal visual inspirations into spaces that evoke joy for them.

Rip & Tan: Whether a style or a feeling, how would you describe the vision and end result for this home?
Phoebe Nicol: The client outlined a desire for a minimalist and neutral aesthetic infused with warmth and character. The goal was to create a family home that radiates light while ensuring an effortless blend of livability, functionality and purpose.
Rip & Tan: Can you walk us through your typical process? How does your architectural perspective influence a project from start to finish?
Phoebe Nicol: My design process is rooted in a holistic architectural perspective, guiding a project from its inception to its final realization. This involves a delicate balance between preservation and enhancement, creating a space that feels both timeless and curated with respect to its unique architecture.

Rip & Tan: This space boasts a mostly neutral palette—what are a few of the ways you created visual and tactile intrigue within a minimal range of shades?
Phoebe Nicol: In crafting a space with a predominantly neutral palette, my emphasis lies in cultivating visual and tactile intrigue through subtle nuances, textures, and carefully selected finishes and fabrics.
Rip & Tan: In what ways does this space balance old and new? Is there any particular homage paid to its 1920s origins?
Phoebe Nicol: In this instance, leveraging the grand scale and proportion of the high ceilings and spacious rooms were paramount. The original details at the front of the home, such as the distinctive led light windows and art deco cornices, contribute beautifully to its unique character.
In keeping with the language of architecture, we have introduced art deco and mid-century pieces including the 1940s Charles Dudouyt Style Desk, Guillerme and Chambron Bar, the 1940s sheepskin armchairs, and the 1940s Oak Daybed in the style of Rene Gabriel to name a few. Despite blending an eclectic mix of styles, the design language remains both original and familiar, creating a distinctive yet comfortable aesthetic.

"The goal was to create a family home that radiates light while ensuring an effortless blend of livability, functionality and purpose."
Rip & Tan: Are there any specific qualities or tells you look for when sourcing eclectic or antique furniture and décor? Any tips for sourcing?
Phoebe Nicol: In the quest for eclectic and antique treasures, my approach is guided by a profound appreciation for authenticity and craftsmanship. I meticulously seek out pieces with a documented provenance, valuing the stories embedded in their history. Quality craftsmanship is non-negotiable—the intricacies of joinery, the finesse of carvings, and the overall execution must bear testament to exceptional artisanship.
Rip & Tan: What are some of the core characteristics of a luxe but pared-back interior?
Phoebe Nicol: In the pursuit of a luxe yet pared-back interior, I approach the design with a discerning eye, seeking a harmonious synthesis of opulence and simplicity.
