METAFLORA’s Marisa Competello On Her Floral Design Philosophy

August 07, 2025

Marisa Competello’s path from fashion stylist to floral designer was less a pivot than a natural evolution—one where creative instinct found a new medium. Through METAFLORA, her NYC-based floral design company, she crafts arrangements that feel like sculpture: minimal, expressive, and imbued with movement. In this conversation, she shares her intuitive approach to creating arrangements and how to find seasonal inspiration—especially in the summer.

METAFLORA’s Marisa Competello On Her Floral Design Philosophy

Rip & Tan: Let’s start at the beginning—what inspired you to create METAFLORA?

Marisa Competello: I was working in the fashion industry as a stylist assistant for a decade and was craving a change. I wanted something of my own and distinctly chose flowers as my new medium.

Rip & Tan: Your arrangements are so minimal yet sculptural—they’re stunning. How would you describe your floral design philosophy?

Marisa Competello: It’s quite intuitive and I believe it’s informed by both my history in fashion and my life as a dancer. Distinct shapes and movements were created in the design, but also a discerning style in terms of composition and color.

Rip & Tan: How does the occasion or purpose of an arrangement shape your approach? Do you design differently for intimate versus large events?

Marisa Competello: The occasion definitely shapes the design in terms of color and the feeling behind each component.  Designing for events is really influenced by the space itself. Considering the interior as well as the purpose of the event.

Rip & Tan: For those of us who love flowers but don’t know where to begin, do you have a simple starting formula or framework for creating a balanced arrangement?

Marisa Competello: I always tell people to start to play. There’s no right way, and beauty is up for interpretation. Asymmetry is also your friend! Create an interesting shape, use angles, and have fun.

Rip & Tan: For someone looking to create a summery arrangement at home, where do you recommend starting?

Marisa Competello: If you live somewhere with access to a flower district or a farmers market, they will have seasonal options. Or get in your car and see what you can forage from the area around your neighborhood. I always have shears in my car for this reason.

Rip & Tan: Any tips for keeping an arrangement fresh longer in the summer heat?

Marisa Competello: Continue to add water and keep away from direct sun—just enjoy them while they last. Fleeting beauty!
