In Uniform: Lauren Burke's Sartorial Take on Motherhood
July 11, 2024
Personal style is a form of self-expression that finds a way to effortlessly ground us through all of life’s moments—motherhood included. We spent an afternoon with Cafe Society Founder, Lauren Burke, and her daughter, Rumi, for a look into just how powerful style can be.

In Uniform: Lauren Burke's Sartorial Take on Motherhood
Rip & Tan: How would you describe the essence of your personal style?
Lauren Burke: I would describe my style as classic and pared back. I gravitate towards pieces that make me feel comfortable and, therefore confident. You can typically find me in a tee and jeans or low rise, wide-leg pants.
Rip & Tan: Have you experienced any type of style evolution since becoming a mother? If so, we’d love to hear more about it.
Lauren Burke: I have stayed pretty true to my personal style throughout my pregnancy and post-partum. However, since becoming a mother, I have made sure all my outfits are easily accessible for nursing, especially when it comes to nursing in public.
Rip & Tan: Are there any notions of style you hope to impart on your daughter?
Lauren Burke: Growing up (and still today), I looked at my own mother’s style for inspiration so I can only hope that my daughter will do the same with me. Whether she grows up to have a similar style to me or not, one aspect I would always like for her to remember is to always dress true to herself. When she is older, I think it’s also great to create a capsule wardrobe that she can continue to build on forever.
Rip & Tan: Any tips for those days you simply don’t know what to wear—especially during postpartum?
Lauren Burke: For me, it was really important to feel a bit put together each day postpartum—it gave me a sense of self. Now more than ever, I gravitate towards pieces that are comfortable. Whether that means throwing on a matching lounge set with trainers and accessorizing with some earrings or my tried and true jeans, a crisp tee, and ballet flats.
Rip & Tan: No matter the time of year, what are a few pieces you’re consistently wearing?
Lauren Burke: Over time, I have created a capsule wardrobe that includes those classic pieces to wear year round–the perfect denim, tees/tanks, cashmere sweaters, button-up shirts, a black oversized blazer, and a great leather jacket. Curating a wardrobe with pieces you know fit well, makes getting dressed each day a seamless process.
Rip & Tan: When do you feel like an outfit is truly complete?
Lauren Burke: Accessories always complete a look for me. You can elevate a very simple outfit with the right jewelry and a handbag. Adding a hat is another one of my favorite ways to compliment an outfit and make it a bit more interesting.
