In Uniform: How Taffy Msipa Spots a Classic

Rip & Tan: How would you describe your signature style?

Taffy Msipa: I would describe my style as a blend of the 90’s and modern classic, drawn toward neutral tones. Focusing on mixing various textures when choosing garments and structure to elevate and emphasize an outfit. I love oversized, but I also adore fitted–I tend to mix both into an outfit.

Rip & Tan: What shaped your experience and understanding of style?

Taffy Msipa: Through traveling and my love of architecture and interior design. Along the way, I have picked up many different styles. My go-to’s are statement pieces that are high quality to ensure I can wear them for many years to come. For example, a structured oversized blazer that I can wear a knit jumper underneath paired with jeans or tailored trousers, completed with a good pair of leather shoes which I find look better as they age.

Rip & Tan: Do you have any particular influences you turn to for outfit inspiration?

Taffy Msipa: There is a blend of influences, mostly travel, culture and music. I also love looking through old Vogue magazines that showcase styles from the 90’s–I always find old and new blend together beautifully to create an outfit.

Rip & Tan: Can you tell us about your first style memory? Or a significant memory that you carry with you in the way you get dressed today?

Taffy Msipa: My mother gave me one of her old pinstripe blazers and I remember when she first gave it to me I could not stop wearing it. I wore it with baggy jeans, skinny jeans, leggings and poplin skirts, I still have it now.

Rip & Tan: How do you approach the art of getting dressed?

Taffy Msipa: There is always one significant piece, whether it’s the bag, shoes, sweater or long coat, I choose my statement item and dress around it. I also love to accessorize through jewelry or through my hairstyle, I think both of these elements can bring a look to life.

Rip & Tan: When you’re sourcing new staples, what qualities do you tend to gravitate toward? What makes something worth the investment?

Taffy Msipa: If the quality feels good–wool, cotton and linen tend to be my favorite materials. Another element is whether it is a statement piece or a good basic, it must be a timeless item that can be paired with many looks.

Rip & Tan: When it comes to trends, how do you decide whether or not you’ll participate? Any tips for making a trend your own?

Taffy Msipa: I ask myself three questions—would I wear it every day, is the quality good and will I wear it in years to come? I like to invest in key pieces that can be worn with multiple outfits throughout the different seasons this usually is the deciding factor.

Rip & Tan: What pieces or looks are you most looking forward to styling this spring?

Taffy Msipa: I love skirts and matching sets that can be worn as separates. I am so excited to style oversized poplin shorts with denim skirts and Birkenstocks. Outfits that are simple but feel so comfortable and chic.

Rip & Tan: When in doubt, what’s one outfit you can always count on?

Taffy Msipa: A blazer, round neck fitted t-shirt paired with tailored trousers
