In Uniform: How Anna Porte Finds Comfort in the Classics

Rip & Tan: How would you describe the essence of your personal style?

Anna Porte: My personal style is anchored in the classics. I love looking polished, but not at the expense of being comfortable. I’m forever inspired by 90s minimalism, so I lean towards neutral color palettes and understated looks to bring that to life.

Rip & Tan: What’s your general approach to getting dressed?

Anna Porte: Comfort all the way! It is my number one criterion when getting dressed. And confidence plays a role, too—if you feel good in what you wear, that will shine through no matter what.

Rip & Tan: No matter the time of year, what are a few pieces you’re consistently wearing?

Anna Porte: Denim (I have a bit of an obsession), a white t-shirt, and a great sweater.

Rip & Tan: As the weather begins to warm, what are some items or aesthetics you’re most excited to style?

Anna Porte: I love the versatility and effortlessness of a cotton pant, short, or skirt. You can dress them up or down and they’re just as at home in the city as they are in the country or on the beach. I live in cotton bottoms all summer long!

Rip & Tan: How does your locale tend to influence the clothes you wear?

Anna Porte: I live in Montreal, which means cold, snowy winters, super hot summers, and very few temperate days in between! Staying stylish in the face of weather extremes can feel difficult, but I’ve come to appreciate the way it forces me to get creative. I’ve definitely learned the importance of layering and accessorizing to add style and interest to a practical outfit.

Rip & Tan: Any tips for those days you simply don’t know what to wear?

Anna Porte: Keep it simple and stick to the classics. I swear by having a section in my closet for “favorites.” On days when I feel stuck, I lean on those tried and true staples; I can always count on them to make me feel good.

Rip & Tan: What does ideal warm-weather accessorizing look like to you?

Anna Porte: I love the stylistic impact a belt can have—it’s a simple, classic way to tie a look together. I also love a great pair of vintage sunglasses for adding edge to an otherwise simple outfit. Two means of adding a stylish pop without worrying about overheating!
