How to Style Your Credenza Just About Anywhere
February 14, 2022
As one of the most ubiquitous pieces of home furniture—yet one of the most misunderstood—the credenza is a furnishing that comes with plenty of well-sourced queries like these: What is a credenza, exactly? It’s a piece of furniture that hails from the 14th century. How do I style or decorate it in my space? With an edited eye. How can a credenza be used? For just about anything. To fill in the gaps to our answers, we asked interior designer Lisa Staton to step in. Using our Mandeville Credenza as her source of inspiration (although any credenza applies, if we’re being honest), here’s how Lisa approaches the credenza how-to.

How to Style Your Credenza Just About Anywhere
Credenza Styling Tip #1: Find the Perfect Placement
“Credenzas are always great for a living room, whether it’s holding a television or integrated for storage. Credenzas can also be handy for keeping kids’ toys out of the way. In an entryway, they help to create the catchall space for keys and mail and work well for hiding essentials like dog leashes and mittens.
I also like credenzas in dining rooms as a low sideboard. Here’s another great tip: for a smaller space or a mudroom, you can store stainless steel or plastic bins inside to hide shoes.”

Credenza Styling Tip #2: Create a Clutter-Free Space
“I always opt for a less-is-more approach and display a few select things that are used in my everyday or are beautiful to look at. Bring out the simple, sculptural things and hide the clutter while still allowing for the elements of your day-to-day to have a rightful place. The credenza helps to create an easy system of organization that allows the clutter to naturally stay grouped and hidden.”
Credenza Styling Tip #3: Keep to the Rule of Three
“I like to think about the credenza as the grounding element for an art wall or a mirror above. I prefer a more thoughtful approach to styling—sometimes I’ll even hand-sketch or use craft paper to see where I want to hang art above a credenza, and then I’ll play around with different vessels atop. Also, remember to bring nature inside! A simple branch or sprig can do the trick.
And then, of course, we have to remember to always edit! The rule of 3 can be helpful for editing. When in doubt, a credenza, a piece of art or a mirror, and a timeless vase or grouping of books will do the trick.”
