In Uniform: Gabriella Gofis’s Guide To Living & Dressing In LA

Rip & Tan: How would you describe your style?

Gabriella Gofis: High, low, and classic. My style definitely leans more classic, as I appreciate classic shirting, denim, and knits.  With that being said, I am always trying to incorporate something unique and unexpected, so nothing feels too minimal. I love mixing high and low pieces whether that be fine jewelry and sweats or designer and high-street. I’ve always gravitated toward ’90s silhouettes and outfitting, and strive for a relaxed, effortless look.

Rip & Tan: What’s your approach to getting dressed?

Gabriella Gofis: I think getting dressed is all about a feeling.  I usually can’t plan an outfit in advance—it’s one of my downfalls. I always want to feel myself and effortlessly styled.  Really my approach is picking one thing I want to base an outfit around, whether it is a pair of shoes or a shirt. I start somewhere, build around it, and always go off of my feelings. It’s like a science lab.  Some days it clicks on the first try, some days I try on multiple pieces to find the right outcome.

Rip & Tan: What’s in your current rotation as we end summer and head into fall?

Gabriella Gofis: Button downs, for sure. I think they are one of the best transitional pieces to take you into a new season. You can style them in so many different ways, yet they always exude a relaxed, polished vibe. I also love cotton knits—they’re perfect for high summer when it’s still hot out, and also when you want to start dressing for fall.

Rip & Tan: With that in mind, what’s your take on transitional style? What pieces do you rely on?

Gabriella Gofis: I love transitional style because LA summer tends to last much longer than most areas.  With the weather being warm into fall, you have to get crafty with transitional dressing. That’s why I love incorporating a lightweight knit or a light long-sleeved button-down anywhere I can. Playing with texture is a great way to make sure your outfit leans more fall. For example, riding boots with a cotton skirt, or suede and summer dresses.

Rip & Tan: When in doubt, what’s an outfit equation you can always count on?

Gabriella Gofis: A Jenni Kayne Cardigan as a top and a pair of vintage Levi’s.  It’s the outfit I reach for the most, probably!

Rip & Tan: What’s the secret to great personal style?

Gabriella Gofis: Great personal style is having a signature outfit that you repeat but style slightly differently every time. I also like to incorporate interesting accessories to switch it up and keep things fresh.

Feeling confident in what you’re wearing goes a long way. I’d rather style my jeans every day if it means I feel confident in what I’m styling.  Also, make sure it is personal to you and unique. Jewelry and accessories are a lovely way to keep styling very personal.

Rip & Tan: As an Angeleno, we’re dying to know: what are your go-to vintage stores in the city?

Gabriella Gofis: The best vintage in LA is at the Rose Bowl Flea Market! I could spend all day there sifting through and finding gems. If I were going to shop in-store, I love the curation at RLT, Wilder Shop, and The Dig. For fancier pieces, I’d probably go to Aralda or Happy Isles.

Rip & Tan: What about restaurants and go-to weekend spots?

Gabriella Gofis: My go-tos are Primo Passo (for coffee), Gjusta (for brunch), Courage Bagels, Sushi Fumi, Izakaya by Katsuya Manhattan Beach, La Scala (for their famous salad), The Window/American Beauty, and Dudley Market (for relaxed but incredible meals). I love hitting the flea markets, picking up flowers at the DTLA Flower Mart, and spending weekend days in Manhattan Beach.

Rip & Tan: What are you currently shopping for?

Gabriella Gofis: Vintage jewelry (including a watch!) and silver collar necklaces. I am also on the hunt for great outerwear for fall!
