Rip & Tan: How would you characterize your interior design ethos?

Emily Gillis: Less has always been more for me, and I prefer quality over quantity. This is my basic design ethos and starting point for all projects. I am drawn to material and texture, intelligent and economical design, and cozy little ‘moments’ or spaces that provide comfort.

Rip & Tan: Do you remember what first drew you to interiors?

Emily Gillis: The Heide Museum of Modern Art, also known as ‘Heide’, was the first time I remember being in awe of the design. I resonate with its modernist design, situated in a rural setting. Heidi comprises vast masses of Mount Gambier limestone, surprising voids and tight walkways, floor-to-ceiling glass plates, and beautifully framed views of nature.

Rip & Tan: How do you typically approach a new project?

Emily Gillis: I aim to thoroughly understand the client and their brief. It’s important to me to get a sense of their personality and how they prefer to live in their space. Visiting the site is essential, and I also like to meet everyone involved in the project.

Initially, we focus on developing a comprehensive floor plan for the entire space. Afterward, we delve into the specifics of each area, determining the desired look and feel.

Rip & Tan: With this home in particular, what was the guiding vision?

Emily Gillis: While rich textures and softness are layered throughout, the primary goal was its connectedness to the past. Every aspect of the home was carefully curated to honor its heritage, with warm tones defining each space for a timeless, relaxed feel.

Rip & Tan: What are some ways you bring dimension and warmth to a space like this, within a minimalist aesthetic?

Emily Gillis: Timber flooring, marble with expressive veins, limestone tiles, and lime-rendered walls bring in a sense of dimension. The fireplace in the main living areas serves as a focal point for gathering and warmth.

The design aims to connect the interiors and the landscape by favoring elegant, nature-inspired materials that will grow more beautiful with age.

Rip & Tan: Can you walk us through some of your favorite finishes and details? How did you select them?

Emily Gillis: The aged bronze wall light by Atelier Maker, which has a quirky-shaped arm, sits above a painting in the formal dining room. I also love the dark-toned mohair rug in the living room for serving as a luxurious and soft floor finish underfoot. Lastly, the hand-carved limestone basin in the powder room is unexpected and captivating when you walk into the room.

Rip & Tan: How would you describe this home in 3 words?

Emily Gillis: Elegant, textured, calm.

"The design aims to connect the interiors and the landscape by favoring elegant, nature-inspired materials that will grow more beautiful with age."
