The Meaning of Home With Blogger & Designer Ashley Kane

January 10, 2022

When Ashley Kane and her husband bought their first home in the fall of 2020 outside of San Francisco, the blogger and designer was eager to put her spin on a space that she could swiftly call her dream home. Rather than rush to fill each room, Ashley—who became a mother last year—took her time sourcing and styling every inch of her space. Continue on for a tour of Ashley’s home, plus our conversation that covers everything from motherhood to defining a design aesthetic.

The Meaning of Home With Blogger & Designer Ashley Kane

Rip & Tan: What were some of the must-have elements on your list when you were house-hunting? How did you know this space was right for you and your family?

Ashley Kane: Great bones, big yard, and natural light. But most importantly, we waited for a space that made us feel something.

While touring the house, we felt an instant draw and an at-home comfort as soon as we walked through the front door. While writing this, I just remembered after leaving (I was about 2 months into my pregnancy and feeling very ill) my husband said “I can see myself becoming a dad in that house.” I had similar thoughts! I have always dreamt of the kind of home and atmosphere I envisioned starting a family in and it just felt right.

Rip & Tan: What is the overall look and feel you aim to emulate with your interiors?

Ashley Kane: My style is very much European-influenced with an appreciation of detail and casual elegance. I am drawn to quality over quantity and a space that feels cheerful and comforting.

Thoughtful fabrics, treasured antiques, and natural elements that ground it all are the key ingredients of our home.

Rip & Tan: Which room do you gravitate towards the most? Why?

Ashley Kane: Our living room is the most lived-in… it’s just a real vibe! Happy, cozy, and has such magical lighting day to night and year-round.

Rip & Tan: Where did you source some of your favorite pieces from? What are some of your favorite finds?

Ashley Kane: Estate sales, Etsy, auction websites, eBay, antique dealers.

Some of my very favorite finds include an Italian chandelier sourced by an antique dealer in Murano, Italy, a Spanish Baroque style writing table found locally, and a Venetian mirror—my most prized Etsy find! And last. but never least, I collect Italian Murano lighting and vases.

Rip & Tan: How has motherhood influenced your aesthetic?

Ashley Kane: Our daughter has brought more color into our life and home both literally (her room is the most delicious terracotta hue!) and figuratively. I also think she influenced our plaster tulip sconces, they bring a bit of fun and whimsy into our living room—something I want for her as she grows up.

Interior design was the first thing I was passionate about in life… as a young girl, it is what inspired me the most. A lot of people say that when you have a baby you have to uproot your style, but I disagree! I think with each phase of her life I will have to get crafty and rearrange some things, but my style will remain true to me forever.

Rip & Tan: Everything in your home feels incredibly intentional. What tips do you have for someone who’s eager to complete their space but doesn’t want to sacrifice their vision?

Ashley Kane: I would rather have a room with 2 pieces that I adore than filling a room for the sake of it. We are going to live in our home for many years, so I continue to remind myself to be wise with investments and thoughtful with each and every design decision. Hold out for the special and unique.

Rip & Tan: What does living well mean to you?

Ashley Kane: Surrounding yourself with people, rituals, and pieces that uplift your mood and life.
