Alma's Flower Avenue Garden
February 16, 2016
Sometimes the most beautiful things can be found in the most unexpected of places. Such was the case when we had the opportunity to visit the garden of urban culinary farmer Courtney Guerra, a green oasis nestled in the center of Venice. The herbs and produce that her garden yields: harvested five days a week for Alma, one of Downtown LA’s most acclaimed restaurants.
My little lady and I stopped by the garden with Alma Co-Owner and Chef, Ari Taymor, and had such a great time (both in plaid, I wore my new Flannel Shirtdress). Filled to the brim with items that set it apart from what is offered in the markets – mainly esoteric produce, herbs and micro greens – the garden is a true collaboration between Courtney and Ari. Together they determine what to grow each season, planning the growing schedule at least three months in advance of when it will be found on a plate. And three times a week, Ari stops by the garden to make a pick-up.
This practice of urban farming is not only providing fresh herbs and produce for the restaurant, but also giving to the community though Alma Community Outreach, a nonprofit founded by Alma Co-Owner Ashleigh Parsons. Working to engage underprivileged students and their families in the process of gardening, cooking and eating together, the program currently has partnerships with several schools in the Downtown area, establishing a wellness curriculum that includes regular cooking classes and on-campus garden beds.
It was such a nice visit (we even picked radishes for Ari to juice and ferment). Be sure to stay tuned tomorrow as Ari and Ashleigh welcome us in for an incredible meal showcasing all the beautiful herbs and vegetables, straight from the garden. XXJKE
