In Uniform: Alexis Badiyi's Curated City Style

Rip & Tan: What are some items or looks you’re most excited to style for summer?

Alexis Badiyi: I am excited to incorporate some new vintage finds into my day to day. I love blending archival pieces with my ready to wear. For example, I love the new Jenni Kayne Pleated Shorts and I’m excited to style them with a recently sourced aqua sheer YSL scarf top.

Rip & Tan: How would you describe your personal style?

Alexis Badiyi: Classic, elegant with a hint of theatrics.

Rip & Tan: What tips do you have for those trying to define their own personal style?

Alexis Badiyi: Give yourself the grace to experiment and have fun with it. Check in with yourself and see which colors, silhouettes, and outfits make you feel the most you. Over time you will develop your eye and style intuition when creating your wardrobe.

Rip & Tan: What’s your approach to styling? Any must-know spots for sourcing or favorite ways to feel inspired?

Alexis Badiyi: Styling is a very intuitive and emotional process for me. I begin by connecting to a theme, an event, a season, or a single item and then build the look around this.

I enjoy people watching, reviewing runway old and new, and I love vintage shopping. I use the Gem app online. Ending soon in the Lower East Side has an incredible designer archive as well. Maimoun has a great curated buy of some of my favorite independent designers, online and in their by-appointment atelier in LA.

Rip & Tan: When in doubt, what’s one outfit combination you can always count on?

Alexis Badiyi: A great pair of trousers, a button-up and a cashmere sweater over my shoulders, jewelry, and a stained lip.

Rip & Tan: What are some upcoming trends you can’t wait to try? Anything you’re eager to do away with?

Alexis Badiyi: I wouldn’t say I am very trend driven per se. I do like to experiment with the ones that personally move something for me, which can be fun seasonally. I am still playing with bits of unexpected sheer pieces in my summer ensembles. I am also enjoying the playful embellishments in fashion at this time. It has been fun to bring that touch of costumery to my evening looks.

Rip & Tan: What are the non-starters you think every well-dressed woman needs in her wardrobe?

Alexis Badiyi: Invest in timeless, well-fitting, classic pieces that can be worn repeatedly each season.

A well-fitting suit that can be worn together or as separates, a cashmere cardigan or hoodie, a well worn-in pair of denim, a crisp button-up, and a well-fitting slip dress.
