Rip & Tan: As you were originally conceptualizing everything this house would be, what were your hopes for the space?

Alex Snodgrass: We wanted somewhere that we could express ourselves and style, and definitely thought a lot about how we could create great hosting spaces! As a couple, we’ve always loved to host our friends and family so that was very important to us.

Rip & Tan: Whether it’s an entire room or a specific piece or finish, is there an element of the design you’re most fond of?

Alex Snodgrass: I personally love our vinyl room. My husband’s vinyl collection is quite extensive so having a dedicated room has been wonderful. When hosting, it is where we end up congregating at the end of dinner for a cocktail and good music. It’s a sacred room for us and we’ve made so many incredible memories with friends and family here! It’s just a VIBE.

Rip & Tan: In terms of both design style and a general feeling, how would you describe your home?

Alex Snodgrass: I think it’s modern with a touch of funk. I love that the bones and layout of our home are pretty straightforward, but then we add fun colors, art, and items to bring life and character to each room.

Rip & Tan: In what ways is the space set up for entertaining?

Alex Snodgrass: We have a very large living room that allows for both standing room and also plenty of seating space which has been great when hosting larger parties. This room was actually a big reason we ended up buying this house. It leads directly through two large double doors into the kitchen and dining room. If I am hosting a large dinner party or gathering, it all flows into one big space which I find perfect for entertaining! But if I want to make a gathering at the dining table more intimate, I can also close the double doors to make it feel more cozy.

Rip & Tan: We can imagine the kitchen took high priority—any specific features you’re particularly obsessed with?

Alex Snodgrass: We put a lot of thought and major changes into the kitchen in our home. When we bought the house, it was actually three separate rooms—the dining room, a smaller kitchen, and a breakfast nook all with walls in between. We took down the walls to make it one big room. The dining room and kitchen are now one open concept and I love that when I am hosting and cooking. I personally hate when I am by myself in the kitchen and everyone else is hanging out in another room, so I love that this can be one large gathering space.

Rip & Tan: From the architectural doors down to the red knobs on your stovetop, everything in this space feels so bespoke—can you share any of the inspiration behind some of your favorite custom details?

Alex Snodgrass: Quite frankly, the bespoke feel to the house is more of my husband than me. I love spaces and interiors, but I don’t quite have the eye for it. Clayton has always loved and had an obsession with architecture and design which can really be seen throughout the house. His style is what pushes the boundaries of our spaces and his love of art throughout the home shows.

Rip & Tan: How did indoor/outdoor flow factor into the greater design of your living space?

Alex Snodgrass: To be honest, when we initially moved in, our focus was fully on renovating the interior of the home and our backyard took a backseat…until now! We currently have all sorts of action going on in our backyard and are days away from digging our new pool and pool house. This is something we’ve waited three years to do and we are so excited. Our kitchen and living room sliding doors will open up to our backyard oasis and I cannot wait.

Rip & Tan: What does home mean to you?

Alex Snodgrass: Home means everything to me. It’s the space that my kids will grow and learn. It’s where we feel safe and secure. It’s a space where we can make special memories and invite our family and friends to share with us. Being home with my family and pets, having something cooking in the oven, and just being comfortable and safe here is what life is all about.
