A Tour of Meritt Elliott’s Bohemian Los Angeles Home

June 7, 2016

It’s true that Meritt Elliott and her business partner and best friend, Emily Current, share an aesthetic that is instantly recognizable in their work as stylists and designers, (see: The Great).  But get to know them personally, and you’ll see that they have distinct creative points of view. While Emily is a little bit more rock ‘n’ roll, Meritt leans a little more glamorous. They both favor layered neutrals, plush, inviting seating, and worldly textiles in their homes, but Meritt’s framed black-and-white photos, globe lighting, and canopied bed give away her romantic and girly side.

Get to know Meritt a little bit in today’s Q&A and if you missed our interview with Emily yesterday, be sure to check that out when you’re done! XXJKE

Rip & Tan: What makes Los Angeles a special place to live?

Meritt Elliott: It is endlessly warm, full of creative inspiration and a stone’s throw from amazing beaches, museums and parks.

Rip & Tan: How would you describe the style of your home?

ME: It’s a mix of bohemian, modern, American and fun. It is designed for comfort and entertaining.

Rip & Tan:  What item or space in your home makes you happy?

ME: My dining room. The dining table is a big, custom farm table that is perfect for big family meals and art projects. We built a big soft banquet that surrounds the table that doubles as an inviting couch and rest place.

Rip & Tan:  What’s your idea of the perfect night in?

ME: Swimming with my kids, an outdoor movie and popcorn.

Rip & Tan:  How do you find balance between work and personal life?

ME: It’s not easy! I steal moments of fun when I can—quick happy-hour dates down the street with my husband, or early morning pedicures before work. Sometimes it’s imperative to plan things that bring you balance, other times it’s even more important to grab a moment of peace or fun when the moment arises!

Rip & Tan:  What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

ME: Conviction and communication are the key to success.

Rip & Tan:  What makes your working relationship with Emily so strong?

ME: Amazing communication, endless support and advocacy for one another, and a great sense of humor.

Rip & Tan:  Where do you find inspiration?

ME: Everywhere from music, street style, flea markets, my kids and my childhood memories.

Rip & Tan:  What are your five of your style essentials?

ME: Denim, white tee shirts, black leather biker jackets, old converse and just about anything gold.

Rip & Tan:  What’s something you’ve learned as a stylist that every woman could benefit from?

ME: Be comfortable in what you wear—it is more impactful to be confident and relaxed in your clothes than on trend.

Rip & Tan:  What are a few of your favorite stores in Los Angeles?

ME: Heist, Garde, and Jenni Kayne.

Rip & Tan:  What is your favorite thing to do at the end of a long day?

ME: Get in cozy clothes, play with my kids, and order pizza.

Rip & Tan:  What are a few of your essentials for a beach vacation or getaway?

ME: Vintage caftans, Honest Company sunscreen, Janessa Leone hats and my kindle.

Rip & Tan:  What item in your closet could you not live without—or, what holds the most sentimental value to you?

ME: I cannot live without my vintage denim collection. Each piece has a special memory of where and when I found them, and what design it eventually inspired!

I also never leave home without my beautiful wedding rings from both my late and new husband. They make me feel protected.
