The Jenni Kayne Ranch: Great Room Reveal
April 20, 2022
While every room at the Jenni Kayne Ranch is designed with the view in mind, there’s one place we find ourselves drawn to for every sun-filled moment: the great room. A gathering space in the truest sense, the great room greets you the moment you walk through the front doors and invites you to stay for more. But, like everything else at the Ranch, this space wasn’t always the room you see. Below, we take you through our design process—from reconfiguring walls and choosing paint colors to sourcing vintage furnishings and everything in between.

The Jenni Kayne Ranch: Great Room Reveal

The Process
The original great room had a sunken sitting area with a look and feel that dated back to the 70s. We swiftly identified what was meant to stay—the fireplace, pitched wood ceilings, and breathtaking views—and what could go. We ripped out the carpet, adjusted some elements of the room’s layout, leveled out the flooring, and made way for giant windows and doors as pictured in the before and afters.
We wanted the room to feel light and bright, so we went with engineered white Oak floors—Monarch European Oak in Fontenay to be exact—accented with exterior windows and doors from OTIIMA that invite the outdoors in. The walls and ceiling got a fresh coat of paint with our favorite shade from Portola Paints: Gem. We used Portola’s Roman Clay finish, which gives it a plaster-like look and adds plenty of movement. For the fireplace, we plastered the exterior and used a textured Cali Gris stone for the hearth.

The Details
As we started thinking through the furniture plans and imagining possible layouts, we decided that rather than have the space be one large room, we should encourage all forms of gathering with two separate seating areas. The result is an essential factor to the room’s success: when you walk in, you’re greeted with a more traditional, parlor-style room that enables you to get comfortable with ease.
When it came to furnishing the room, we started with a rug—but the great room’s narrow length made finding the perfect addition difficult, so we decided to commission a custom rug from Armadillo. With that in place, we began arranging each piece of furniture: the fireplace scene comes alive with our Harbor Sofa in Natural Linen and vintage chairs, while the lounge-like side is styled with our Bay Coffee Table in Oak and Brentwood Boucle Chairs in Ivory Wool Boucle—both of which boast a low profile so as not to obstruct the view.
While we had plenty of fun outfitting the space with furniture and décor from Jenni Kayne Home, we sourced many accents and accessories from vintage destinations like Galerie Provenance. From the trough that holds the pile of wood beside the fireplace to the antique side table styled simply, each element works together to tell an impactful design story.
