I was first introduced to Clare years ago through our mutual friend Jessica de Ruiter. She had just started making her amazing bags – I was immediately hooked and picked them up for my stores. Ever since, she has been making custom Clare V. for Jenni Kayne clutches , using the colors of each season’s collection. Naturally, I was thrilled when she welcomed us into her home and store, which are the perfect extensions of her signature aesthetic.

Built in 1905, her home is a beautifully restored Craftsman, kept charming and unspoiled with many of its original details. Inside: a mix of modern and antique, and a space that feels warm, effortless, and wonderfully lived-in. I hope you enjoy this peek inside. XXJKE

Beauty

R+T: What are your go-to beauty products? Why?

Decleor Cleansing Milk, Decleor Aroma Night Balm, Weleda Day Cream and Night Cream, and Chanel mascara.

R+T: Is there anything special you would like to share about your beauty routine?

I’ve always been a cleansing milk person, because my skin is very dry and it doesn’t dry it out as much with cleansing milk as it does with soap and water.

R+T: What are the 5 products you couldn’t live without?

Rodin lip balm, Chanel mascara, Decleor Aroma Night Balm and Rene Furterer dry shampoo.

R+T: Bath or Shower?

I prefer showers.

R+T: What do you sleep in?

My Steven Alan cotton bloomers and a PJ shirt from Chance or Sleepy Jones.

Decor

R+T: What is your design philosophy for your home?

We have a big mixture of French antiques from France and pieces from flea markets in Southern California, alongside some new modern pieces. My motto is anything works.

R+T: What are your favorite pieces in your house?

Our green baby grand piano which my son Oscar plays, and various pieces of art from friends Simone Shubuck, Deedee Cheriel and Frohawk. And I love walking into our den and seeing all of my husband’s photos that he’s been printing.

R+T: What are your favorite home stores?

I love visiting the various antique stores in our neighborhood (Silverlake), Sunbeam Vintage, Steven Alan Home in Tribeca and Heath.

R+T: What is your favorite room in the house?

My bedroom, especially on sunny mornings with the balcony doors wide open. It feels almost like being in a tree house.

Fashion

R+T: How would you describe your style?

It’s a kind of gamine chic. I love French style and love mixing pieces from different designers, genres of style, etc. together to create my own look.

R+T: Who are your favorite designers?

Designers I love to wear day-to-day are Isabel Marant, Acne, Steven Alan, Demy Lee, but favorite designers for special occasions are Celine, St. Laurent, Marni, Givenchy …the list goes on.

R+T: What are the 5 pieces you can’t live without this season?

My Acne Pop Capital cropped jeans in white with paint speckles, my super light pink Steven Alan scarf, my black Acne ankle boots, the Isabel Marant parka that got me through a super snowy trip to NY and my new Isabel Marant geometric print heels that have been excited for warmer weather.

R+T: What is your uniform?

Some sort of cropped pant (jeans or trousers), usually a button down and blazer. I’ve also been transitioning to spring slowly by wearing some of my favorite sandals and heels with socks.

R+T: What is your newest purchase?

Those Isabel Marant geometric print heels that I snapped up on my latest trip to Paris at Le Bon Marche.

Food

R+T: Is there anything about your diet you would like to share with R+T?

I try my best to do everything in moderation. I do love Loire Valley red wines and a good steak frites is always a favorite.

R+T: Do you cook?

These days it is usually my husband.

R+T: What is your child’s favorite recipe?

The Tortilla Pizza from Weelicious.

Art

R+T: Who are your favorite artists?

My dear friend Simone Shubuck, who did a great collage piece for my store in New York. I also have a beautiful piece from her in my home.

R+T: What is your favorite piece of art you own?

That’s got to be my favorite one. It’s huge and the colors look so good in the hallway upstairs.

Kids

R+T: Are there any kids finds you want to share with Rip+Tan?

ESP No1 jeans at Tomboy Kids in Silverlake. My son Oscar lives in them.

R+T: What are your favorite places to shop for kids?

I get almost everything for my son at J. Crew, or Tomboy Kids in Silverlake.

R+T: What’s your favorite thing to do/place to go on the weekends with your kids?

We love to go hiking in the area, especially around Griffith Park, etc.

R+T: What is your favorite restaurant to eat at with the whole family?

Taix in Silverlake, we’re there at least once a week – we eat in the bar area – not the restaurant.

Steven Alan, Mohawk General Store, Barneys, Le Bon Marche in Paris.

Paris, nothing is better.
