In Uniform: Londoner Marilyn NK's Iconic Style

Rip & Tan: How would you describe your personal style? How does it evolve with the seasons?

Marilyn NK: I would say it’s minimal with a twist. I love wearing neutrals and keeping my outfits classic. In the last 2 years, I would say I have finally found my personal style and am confident in what I wear and the decisions I make when it comes to fashion. I don’t feel the need to take part in every trend, I would rather choose what will work best with other pieces in my wardrobe and what I can wear all year round.

Rip & Tan: How do you dress for warmth without compromising your look this time of year?

Marilyn NK: Most of the time the coat is the outfit! It’s easy to add layers underneath and a scarf on top depending on how cold it is. If I have an occasion where the coat has to be removed I always ensure there’s a cool but warm outfit underneath, my go-to is a shirt and statement trousers usually a barrel leg. A great tip for occasion dressing in the winter is to invest in what I like to call statement basics, this could be a sculptural piece, an hourglass blazer or shirt, or a barrel leg trouser. This way you don’t have to compromise your style over warmth.

Rip & Tan: Does your work influence your personal style?

Marilyn NK: Yes and no, for the most part no because I have spent so many years finding my style through trial and error, and as a result, I have created a classic but edgy wardrobe where every piece works together no matter what I ‘throw on’. Yes, because I’m constantly exposed to trends, new collections and new pieces and naturally have the urge to try these out.

Rip & Tan: Do you have any layering tips that readers can incorporate into their own wardrobes?

Marilyn NK: If layering, I like to layer once max twice, depending on how thick the clothing is, starting from thin layers to thick. I would also keep to 3 colors when layering to keep the look classic. Another way to achieve a chic layering look is to add a thin turtleneck that adds a 90s feel to any outfit.

Rip & Tan: Where do you like to shop in London?

Marilyn NK: Usually in central London, Harrods is my go to for luxury shopping. They have everything I need under one roof. I find that the high street is really strong at the moment and my go-to’s are Cos, Massimo Dutti and Arket, these brands are successfully creating high-end pieces at affordable prices. When I have time I also love to thrift, it’s great to find cool pieces that could range from clothing to furniture.

Rip & Tan: Where do you go in London when you need a dose of inspiration?

Marilyn NK: The amazing thing about living in London is that there’s inspo everywhere! I was in my local grocery store and I noticed an older man wearing a simple but chic outfit consisting of a green bomber jacket, graphic t-shirt, grey tailored trousers and trainers. I made a mental note to recreate this look as I absolutely loved it!
