Inside Katie Harbison’s Stunning Restoration of a London Heritage Home
Rip & Tan: How do you get inspired when starting a new project?
Katie Harbison: I always look at the architecture of the project and this language typically serves as the foundation for the overall design narrative. I strive to ensure that the interiors feel like a natural extension of the architecture, creating a seamless and cohesive design that enhances the integrity of the space rather than competing with it. My goal is for every element, from spatial flow to materiality, to feel intentional and harmonious throughout the project.
Rip & Tan: Marble and natural stone seem to be signature elements in a Katie Harbison design. How do you incorporate these materials in ways that feel fresh and unexpected, rather than predictable?
Katie Harbison: My design aesthetic is deeply rooted in European classic design, where timeless elegance and refined detailing form the foundation of a space. I frequently incorporate marble into our projects for the contrast it brings. Its natural beauty and richness add depth while offering a contemporary edge. When set against a classically inspired architectural backdrop, this interplay between traditional and modern elements results in a design that feels sophisticated and balanced.

Rip & Tan: What story does this particular space tell? What was the vision?
Katie Harbison: The vision for this home was to create a design that thoughtfully respected and preserved the heritage character of the architecture while adapting it to suit the needs of a young, growing family. Our approach was to maintain a fundamentally neutral palette in the primary living spaces, allowing the home’s architectural beauty to take center stage. To bring warmth and personality, we introduced accents of colour and texture through details such as the marble selections as well as reclaimed and vintage furniture that lends a sense of history and character. This balance between timeless elegance and modern livability ensures the home feels both refined and inviting, effortlessly blending classic and contemporary influences.
Rip & Tan: How did you approach balancing functionality with aesthetics in this space?
Katie Harbison: The clients provided us with a clear and considered brief outlining how they intended to use each room and space within the home. This allowed us to design with purpose, ensuring that every element was tailored to their specific needs and lifestyle. Every decision from spatial planning to materiality was made with the intention of striking a balance between practicality and sophistication to support daily life.

Rip & Tan: If you had to choose, what’s your favorite detail in this space and why?
Katie Harbison: One of my favorite details is the integrated marble grille in the primary shower. It’s a subtle yet impactful design detail that transforms a typically utilitarian element into something refined and seamless. By integrating it within the marble, we ensured it remained as discreet as possible while still serving its purpose, allowing functionality to blend effortlessly with the overall aesthetic.
Rip & Tan: What was a design challenge you encountered during this project? How did you overcome it?
Katie Harbison: Since the property is listed, it was essential to carefully preserve the original building fabric while ensuring that any new design elements complemented and enhanced its historic character rather than competing with it. Our approach focused on respecting the property’s architectural heritage, selecting materials, finishes, and details that felt authentic to the era while seamlessly integrating modern functionality. Every design decision was made with sensitivity to the building’s history, striking a balance between restoration and refinement to highlight its original beauty.
Rip & Tan: Do you have any general tips for readers designing their own spaces?
Katie Harbison: Avoid following trends and instead design your home to reflect your personal style, needs, and the way you truly live. Trends come and go, often becoming oversaturated and feeling outdated far too quickly. A well designed home should stand the test of time, evolving with you rather than being dictated by passing fads. By focusing on thoughtful, intentional design choices that align with your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences, you create a space that feels authentic and enduringly beautiful.
