The Hillside Haven: An Inspired Before & After
September 23, 2022
Having the foresight to see a remodel through to its full potential is a feat unto itself, but possessing the acute design eye needed to put vision to practice is a talent unmatched—and one our team of interior experts continues to invoke without fail. In their latest hands-on design project, they brought the bones of a traditional Brentwood home into an entirely new era. Once desperate for direction—with competing aesthetics and a total lack of flow—the new interior is a covetable space where the natural day-to-day of life can effortlessly unfold.

The Hillside Haven: An Inspired Before & After

The Process
With a simple goal of letting the light in, the Jenni Kayne interiors team brought our signature California sensibilities to the space, opening up the interior with a new, neutral palette, incorporating timeless fixtures, and honoring its vaulted ceilings and exposed wood beams with an elevated yet livable curation of furniture and décor.
The remodel was focused on the details: every single finish and fixture was changed, from the lights and hardware to the tile, stone, and paint. Our team refrained from changing the layout of rooms and instead paid attention to the more uncomplicated touches. Brick fireplaces were given new life through plaster (Portola Paints Roman Clay, of course), the flooring was refinished to make the most of the original, and inviting tones were added throughout.

The Details
To start the before and after transformation, we utilized our favorite destination for any home: Portola Paints. Throughout the home, we counted on various shades including Sea Salt, Oliver, Stone 4, and Skyline.
In the kitchen, we utilized Sun Valley Bronze’s Aero cabinet hardware, deVOL Nickel Mayan Taps, plus plenty of additions from Waterworks—like the Clayburn Farmhouse Sink. For stone, we went with the Bateig Blue Limestone from Stoneland for the kitchen countertops and Carrara White Marble for the bathroom counters. To give the entire space a cohesive sense of calm, we installed Roman Shades from the one and only Wovn Home.
In terms of furnishings and decorative touches, we sourced from the likes of Lucca Antiques, Panopile, Victoria Morris Pottery, and, of course, Jenni Kayne Home. We added Olive Ateliers vessels around the home and made sure to bring in books from Arcana for that stylized touch.
We tied everything together with lighting: a few favorites include the Deborah Ehrlich Jelly Jar Light from March SF and Rose Uniacke light fixtures such as the Small Frosted Lantern, Small Clear Lantern, and Curved Wall Light.
From one room to the next, the entire space is designed to draw you in and fill you with a sense of serenity. Days at the Hillside Haven are marked by intention and instill in everyone who enters an overarching feeling of being right where you’re meant to be.
