Floral Crowns
February 13, 2016

I have always loved the look of a floral headdress – sweet, organic, and simply beautiful. Now that I have a little girl, it seemed the perfect excuse to learn how to make them myself, and such a fun activity for the two of us to do together. We invited a group of adorable little ladies and their Mamas over for a wonderful afternoon with the amazing Amy Blessing as she taught us how to make our own very chic, very homemade headdresses. I asked Amy to share her tips and tricks in creating the perfect floral crown, and hope you enjoy! XXJKE
Supplies:
– 30 gauge wire or thinner
– ribbon
– flowers of your choice (For our headdresses, we used yarrow, veronica, chamomile, and wax flowers.)
Steps:
1. Create a loop with one end of the wire.
2. Cut your flowers into tiny 3-4 inch stems.
3. Lay the flowers on the wire then wrap the wire around the stems 2 or 3 times.
4. Lay the next stem or bunch or flowers on top of the last, hiding the wire.
5. Continue this wrapping until the tiny garland you’ve made goes almost all the way around your head.
6. Cut the wire, making sure it’s long enough to create another small loop with the wire.
7. Cut 2 lengths of ribbon – as long or short as you like – and tie one ribbon onto each loop. This creates a way to close the flower crown around your head by tying the two ribbons.
Notes:
– The flower crowns will wilt and die, so they are best used the day that they are made. Preserve your headdress by putting it into the refrigerator. Some sturdier flowers may last well into the next day, and you can also use flowers that dry well (like herbs) in creating crowns that can be kept for longer.
