The Jenni Kayne Ranch: Backyard Reveal

May 09, 2022

With its lush and lively surroundings, the Jenni Kayne Ranch is an ode to the joys of outdoor living—and there’s no better proof of this point than the backyard. With an entertaining-ready deck overlooking the Santa Ynez Valley and a pool that’s destined for days spent lounging, every element of the yard is one that’s positively poised for a celebrated day in the sun. Below, we share the details of this before and after—how we went from overgrown greenery to a nature-centric retreat.

The Process

Much like the primary suite, great room, and kitchen, the backyard was ready for a total before and after transformation. First up? Pulling up every weed and clearing away space for no-nonsense living. With tidied-up surroundings, we took to surveying the deck to ensure every inch of it was making the most of our view. We added some width to create more space for hosting and installed exterior windows and doors from OTIIMA that add an elevated intensity.

To uphold the notion of indoor-outdoor living, we built a bar that connects to the kitchen’s primary window—an element that solidifies the Ranch as the ultimate entertaining oasis. The countertop matches what we chose for the kitchen—Casper White from Stoneland—to truly tie together the outdoors with what’s within.

The deck itself is made of weathered teak, which will patina over time to reveal a subdued, grayish tone, which works in sync with the muted shades that color the rest of the home. The exterior wood siding is cedar that we painted Benjamin Moore’s Chelsea Gray with the exterior stucco walls being Portola’s Gem.

When it came to landscaping, we aimed to keep it minimal by planting olive trees throughout the property—a choice that just so happens to work in sync with the existing trees. The finishing touch on the build was the pool, which was constructed to look as if it is peering off over the edge of the hills.

The Details

Working in line with the design, we kept the decorative touches for the backyard as simple as can be. Eager for functional forms that would weather the days at the Ranch, we opted for outdoor furniture from Terrain (plus a few pieces coming soon from yours truly).

The rustic coffee tables and side tables were sourced from Brent Comber, whose affinity towards natural materials served as the perfect organic addition to our space. We outfitted the grounds with bikes from Linus and made sure the pool was filled with floats from Oliver James—two details that ensure there’s always something for guests to enjoy.
