Sourcebook: Natural Insect Protection

February 16, 2016

A group of candles and bottles.

Every summer, I find myself looking for the best natural bug sprays for the entire family. And this year, I’m also loving the idea of making my own. Here’s a list of my favorites that I have found to work, as well as a great homemade recipe that I found online.

Sprays & Lotions

I like this All Natural Bug Spray with rosemary, lemongrass and geranium from Nine Brooklyn and this Organic Bug Spray with a host of oils including pure tarragon, juniper, peppermint and citronella, from Cedar Creek Organic Oil.

Some other favorites from some of my favorites: this Citronella Lotion from Santa Maria Novella, this Herbal Insect Repellent from Burt’s Bees, this California Baby Bug Repellent and for anti-itch, Burt’s Bees Bug Bite Relief.

Candles

Perfect for outdoor gatherings: these Citronella Tealight Candles, this Tin Pail Citronella Candle, and this Galvanized Citronella Wax Bucket from Lamplight Tiki.

Making your Own

As mentioned, I found a great recipe for natural insect repellent – comprised of thyme, lavender, lemongrass and witch hazel – and can’t wait to try it out. Some great bottles to use for storage and application: these cobalt blue and amber Boston Round glass options from Specialty Bottle. XXJKE
