I discovered Shirley McLauchlan’s amazing embroidered designs flipping through Milk – one of my favorite kids’ magazines – when I was pregnant with Ripley. I fell in love with her work and wanted to order a custom blanket for Tanner.

Shirley’s collection is all hand-stitched, produced on vintage Scottish woolen blanket material and hand-embellished with all wool or cotton. Everything she makes is unique and authentic, which I love. It’s got a very homemade and crafty vibe, but feels expensive and durable at the same time. Because everything is made to order and custom for your children, it becomes an heirloom. Her work is designed to be something that would last forever and be passed from generation to generation.

Shirley makes amazing blankets, pillows and Christmas stockings. For Tanner, Shirley created a gorgeous embroidered blanket that Ripley brought to him when she came home from the hospital as a gift. I emailed Shirley a list of Tanner’s favorite things and his favorite song, and she customized a cowboy and Indians blanket just for him with his name and birthday on it, as well as a little note from Ripley. Her pieces are pricey, but I think they’re well worth it, as they last forever. When Ripley is in a big girl bed, I’ll order a blanket for her, and I’m thinking about ordering Christmas stockings for them now! XXJKE
