Organizing Your Playroom

February 13, 2016

Four woven baskets with lids are arranged on a wooden floor. They vary in size and have rectangular handles. The largest basket is rounded with a knobbed lid, and framed art is visible in the background.

Organizing kids toys can be tricky, and much depends upon the space that you are working with, but here are a few tips and tools that I use to keep it all together:

Stations

If your space allows, I think it’s so important to create different areas or stations within the playroom – it helps keep things organized, is practical, and creates a space that isn’t too overwhelming for the little ones. I find that this kind of environment also encourages them to play together within a station and really use their imaginations.

For example, in our playroom we keep all of the larger toys organized according to the following: one wall is our Kitchen and Food Section, next to that is a Baby Doll Section, on another wall is their Cleaning and Laundry Section, and nearby we have a space devoted entirely to music.

Baskets

For everything smaller, we have a large built-in that houses woven baskets filled with miscellaneous toys that I try to store in groups. Here are some of the baskets that we use and what we store in each:

Woven Baskets

In our natural Roost woven baskets from my store, I keep farm animals and a little barn in one, wooden cars and miscellaneous transportation in another, puzzles in their own basket, and blocks in yet another.

African Baskets

Next to our playroom sofa, we have a group of large woven African baskets in which we keep additional toys. In two extra-large ones we store all of our characters and stuffed animals – the cast of Sesame Street, Yo Gabba Gabba, and Disney friends. In others we keep costumes, cars, etc. They look great and are incredibly functional. I am partial to the white and natural, but they come in a bunch of great colors. Some of my favorites from Amazon: A Large Basket with Lid, Storage Basket, and Knitting Basket.

Another great option for African Baskets are these chic Tanzanian natural baskets with red woven details. I bought ours from Canvas in NYC, and keep one in Tanner’s room for all of his stuffed animals. They come in a variety of different sizes and also make great trash cans.

Linen Baskets

Another favorites for storing toys is Tampico’s Linen totes. They look great and fit quite a bit. I keep one in the kitchen and one in each of the kid’s bedrooms to keep things together. XXJKE
