The Secret to Jenni’s Effective Morning Routine

October 05, 2022

There’s something about fall in particular that reminds us of the contentment in the smaller moments of our everyday—from the luxury of wrapping yourself in a cable cardigan to a dish made from scratch—little actions have big impact, and real luxury lies in simplicity. It’s a straightforward ethos, but one Jenni lives by, and her skincare is no exception. As indulgent as it ought to feel, she believes caring for your complexion should be the easiest part of your day. So in honor of the launch of the two hardest working additions to our morning and evening Oak Essentials lineup—a brightening, hydrating Daily Vitamin C Serum and a potent yet gentle Nightly Retinol Serum—we met with Jenni to discuss this wholly uncomplicated approach, plus an easy-to-replicate fall recipe bringing her joy this season.

The Secret to Jenni’s Effective Morning Routine

Rip & Tan: What inspired you to introduce serums into the Oak Essentials routine?

Jenni Kayne: I try to be as thoughtful as possible regarding what I put on my skin, but I also want ingredients and products that deliver results. The idea behind Oak Essentials is centered on a “less is more” approach, and I wanted to add foundational serums that can be used morning and night.

Rip & Tan: How do you make skincare feel like a ritual versus just a routine?

Jenni Kayne: I try to take my time with it and really enjoy every moment. Sure, life gets busy, but I like using my beauty routine as a way to slow down and be present.

Rip & Tan: Can you walk us through a typical morning routine?

Jenni Kayne: I start my day with a yerba mate tea or an iced matcha latte iced with almond milk. After I have that, I’ll try to meditate. Then I wash my face and get ready for the day.

If I have extra time, I’ll make sure to foam roll. In terms of exercise, I ride horses in the morning before work and before dropping my kids off at school, and then I do Pilates and Gyrotonic two times a week in the afternoon.

When I wake up I’ll check my phone and then I won’t look at it until I’ve finished my routine, which I feel really helps me start my day off on the right foot.

Rip & Tan: In terms of wellness and self-care, what does an ideal evening look like for you?

Jenni Kayne: I’ll take bath with my son, Trooper, and put a face mask on. Sometimes I’ll sauna before that depending on if I have time. Then, I wash my face, apply my Nightly Retinol Serum, and moisturize with the Ritual Oil and Moisture Rich Balm. I also like to use my red light, which is next to my bed, to help with inflammation.

I also can’t fall asleep until I’ve had my Calm magnesium drink or Moon Juice’s Magnesi-Om.

Rip & Tan: What’s one piece of beauty advice you would give your younger self?

Jenni Kayne: Stay out of the sun, and more importantly, keep your face out of the sun!
