The Best Tips We've Learned From The Guests of Details Matter

Nathan Turner: Designing a Space That's Conducive to Entertaining

“I think we all get caught with like ‘my place isn’t done; it’s not finished.’ But let’s be honest, my place is never going to be finished, it’s always a work in progress. Or, ‘my place is too small.’ If you’re having people over who are going to judge that your space is small or it’s not conducive to their style of entertaining then they shouldn’t even be in your home. Like girl, goodbye. But just do it—figure it out. I think you can get creative with your menu. Maybe you don’t have the ability to do a sit-down dinner. Sit-down dinners are boring anyway, I’m a big buffet person.”

Sarah Winward: Incorporating Flowers Into The Home

“Flowers for your home really can be anything. If you’re at the grocery store shopping to make dinner or you’re having some guests come over and you don’t have very much time, even a bundle of greenery that they have at the grocery store works. Lots of times in floral departments they’ll have just simple bundles of eucalyptus or leather leaf that looks like a fern and I think those in a vase can be just as impactful as a complex arrangement. You don’t have to think too hard about it.”

Leanne Ford: Making Design Magic on a Budget

“When you’re talking about a budget, my number one rule is to double it and that’s when you’re going to get a really cohesive understanding of what you’re about to embark upon. A budget can be a $50 couch off of Craigslist or a $50,000 couch. So it’s up to you to come in with these boundaries ahead of time and control the roll and play with what’s my honest number now double it. If you have $100…buy paint. If you have $500…buy a light. If you have $1,000…buy a rug or two. If you have $5,000…buy a new sofa.”

Sarah Sherman Samuel: Tackling Renovations For The First Time

“I think it’s important to bring character into a new home. I think using natural materials goes a mile. Try bringing in natural stone or living finishes like brass that will patina over time. Focus on things that are handmade—anything that has the human hand to it and can add character to a new home.”
