October 15, 2024

Interior designer Augusta Hoffman has a gift for curating spaces, where soul-filled vintage treasures harmonize with high-end furnishings and elegant architectural details enhance every corner. Curious how someone with such impeccable taste sets a fall table, we asked Augusta for her take—and it’s just as inspired as you’d expect. Read on to take a seat at Augusta’s table, where comfort is key and the context of a space is everything.

Augusta Hoffman’s Holistic Approach To Hosting

Rip & Tan: What was your approach to putting together this tablescape? How did you incorporate seasonal elements?

Augusta Hoffman: Fall is such a cozy season. For this particular tablescape, I focused on warm colors and patinated metals with lots of earthy texture. Seasonality always comes to the forefront when sourcing from the New York flower market. I fell in love with these yellow ochre persimmons, which then inspired me to pull out these vintage yellow plates that I sourced in Paris last year.

Rip & Tan: What makes a gathering feel truly special?

Augusta Hoffman: It’s all about the people! I love bringing together a thoughtful group with fresh energy. Strong cocktails and a good playlist are also a must!

Rip & Tan: Do you have a favorite piece of Jenni Kayne tableware?

Augusta Hoffman: The Pacific Breakfast Bowl is such a favorite. The petite size is so sweet and makes any dish look more curated. I also love the whole collection of frayed table linens. Their organic texture brings so much life to a tablescape.

Rip & Tan: How do your interior design sensibilities influence your approach to setting a table or hosting a gathering?

Augusta Hoffman: I spend so much time sourcing unique, vintage furnishings for my clients. Along the way, I often come across special tableware pieces that inspire festive events. Ultimately, my tablescapes are always dictated by their surrounding rooms. It’s really important to me that gatherings reflect the space they take place in, so I am always weaving textures, colors and materials from the room itself onto the surface of a table.

Rip & Tan: When designing a space, how do you ensure it’s functional for hosting?

Augusta Hoffman: Comfort! I want my guests to always feel like they can help themselves to anything in my kitchen, sit on any chair, and place their drink on any surface. No coasters over here!

Rip & Tan: As we approach the holiday season, what are you most looking forward to?

Augusta Hoffman: My annual holiday party is one of my most favorite nights of the holiday season. Every year I have a theme, and this year I am planning to turn my apartment into a scene from Santa Fe, New Mexico, where my mom lives. Luminarias, chile pepper ristras, and lots of margaritas!

"My number one tip for creating a visually appealing table is picking a beautiful motif or materiality and then using it in abundance for a strong impact."

A small chocolate cake topped with figs sits on a silver stand beside bunches of grapes, dark glass goblets, two lit black candles in silver holders, and a large vase of green foliage on a marble table, evoking Augusta Hoffman’s elegant still lifes.
